Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I see a professional counselor?

Imagine having a chronic disease such as diabetes or an unexpected injury such as a broken arm. Both require medical attention. A chronic illness requires continuous treatment and a broken arm will likely require short term treatment. Either way you would eventually need to seek professional medical care to treat these ailments. Therapy works the same way. Mental health and wellness is an integral part of your overall health and sometimes we need extra support to help us gain clarity, insight and healing into life’s most troubling, painful or confusing seasons. Mental health concerns aren’t always visible, which makes it easier for people to dismiss or hide symptoms. Furthermore, therapists undergo years of clinical training and continuing education to assist individuals with a multitude of issues and concerns. Seeking the right therapist is an important part of the therapeutic relationship. Read more about to seek out the right therapist here

How long will I be in therapy?

Therapy is an individual process. Everyone’s needs are different. Most sessions last for about an hour depending on the therapist/client agreement. Therapy can be short-term and long-term depending on the needs and treatment goals of the client. Psychotherapy is a relational process and an investment into your well-being and growth. It takes as long as it takes.

What does Sex-Positive mean?

I love the definition provided in the book Woman on Fire by Amy Jo Goddard:

“At it’s basic root, to be sex-positive is to acknowledge sexuality as a natural and healthy part of our lives and of who we are. It is to create space for people to make the sexual choices that are right for them, without pressure or judgement that they should be or should like something else. It firmly acknowledges our sexual diversity, that we are the agents of our own desire, and that everyone has rights as sexual beings.” – Amy Jo Goddard, Author of Woman on Fire

What is sex therapy?

Sex therapy is talk therapy. We will not engage in any sexual activity whatsoever. Sex therapy is a specialized form of therapy designed to help individuals navigate issues related to sexuality. Sexuality is not just about sex, it is an integral part of how we interact with ourselves and the world around us.

How do I get started?

Seeking professional therapy takes courage, it is never a sign of weakness. The first step is an initial phone consultation. We will talk for about 15 minutes about what you’re looking for and what your needs are. I will also answer any questions you have about this process. If this feels like a match, we will proceed to schedule the intake session.

Do you accept insurance?

No, I do not accept insurance. Some insurance companies will reimburse for behavioral health services. Please contact your insurance provider prior to services to determine if out-of-network reimbursement is an option. I do accept HSA/FSA cards.

Why is therapy so expensive?

Psychotherapy is an investment in your health but it’s not always accessible for financial reasons. I do have limited sliding scale spots. If you are experiencing financial issues, please mention those concerns during our consultation call. The fees I collect, including no-show and late cancellation fees, are used to help pay for office rent, additional training, and to improve the overall quality of services that I provide for my clients. Therefore, it is imperative that I collect these fees on a timely basis in order to maintain my practice.

Can I add you on social media?

I have a strict ‘No Add’ policy. I do have professional social media platforms that you are welcome to follow but I highly encourage you to refrain from commenting or mentioning your affiliation with our therapeutic relationship to ensure safety and anonymity.

Do you only work with sex-related issues?

No, I work holistically with individuals who may need assistance navigating life’s most common issues such as grief and loss, anxiety and life adjustment issues however we often find sexuality is often impacted by these issues.

Do you only work with adults?

Yes. If you are looking for someone who works with children or adolescents for a variety of concerns, I can provide referrals to qualified professionals.
